Two maternity support workers (MSWs) have been recognised for their vital contribution and exceptional support of nursing and midwifery practice in NHS England’s Chief Midwifery Officer’s Awards.

Jenny Riley and Beverley Hynes, who both work at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust (MTW), were presented with the awards on Wednesday 9 October by NHS England’s Regional Deputy Chief Midwife, Angie Velinor. The awards are presented every year to a small number of MSWs in recognition of their compassion, dedication and demonstration of NHS values.

MSWs work to complement the high-quality care given by midwives and other clinicians to parents and their babies, providing support during labour and delivery, doing routine check and observations and educating new parents and family members.

Jenny received an award in the ‘Improving lives’ category and was praised for her integral role in setting up Maidstone Birth Centre’s popular Newborn Café, offering weekly support to new parents with expert advice, help with feeding and the opportunity to meet others at a similar stage of parenthood.

Beverley’s award was in the ‘Working together with patients’ category for always putting the birthing person and their family first and giving excellent newborn advice about all aspects of care.

There for the award presentations was MTW’s Director of Maternity, Rachel Thomas who said: “I’m delighted Jenny and Beverley’s hard work and dedication to providing outstanding care to our service users has been recognised at a national level. This is testament to the incredible work done by our MSWs, who are invaluable members of our team.”
