A digital initiative supporting the development of pharmacy professionals has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award.
The Coach a Pharmacist Prescriber (CAPP) platform, designed by Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust (MTW) and NHS Kent and Medway, has been recognised in the ‘Enhancing Workforce Engagement, Productivity and Wellbeing through Digital’ category at the 2025 HSJ Digital Awards.
The HSJ Digital Awards recognise digital innovation and developments in healthcare that transform care delivery, enhance efficiency and improve patient outcomes.
CAPP is a secure, interactive coaching platform for pharmacists undertaking independent prescribing qualifications. These trainees require the supervision of a designated prescribing practitioner (DPP) but the national shortage of DPPs can make it difficult for trainees to find a mentor.
Using an algorithm providing a targeted, locally-based service, the CAPP platform matches trainees with mentors, equipping the next generation of prescribers with the support they need to successfully complete their training.
The platform also facilitates communication between mentors and trainees, and offers a range of resources for additional support. Though currently set up for use in Kent and Medway, it has the potential to support multi-professional prescribers across the country.
Mildred Johnson, Chief Pharmacist and Clinical Director of Pharmacy and Medicines Optimisation at MTW, said: “Pharmacy plays a fundamental role in patient care and treatment, and it is vital we support our workforce to develop their skills and advance their practice. The CAPP platform will make it easier for trainees to access the support and expertise they need to complete their training, ensuring patients have access to the qualified pharmacy professionals they need.
“It has been a pleasure to work with colleagues at NHS Kent and Medway on this project and to innovate together. Thank you also to MTW’s IT and Information Governance teams for supporting the project, and to PLD for their expertise in building the platform.”
The winners of this year’s HSJ Digital Awards will be announced at an awards ceremony on 26 June.
