Professional Profile
Mr John Donohue is a consultant urological surgeon with a specialist interest in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. He qualified from Trinity College, Dublin and did his basic surgical training in Dublin. After completing his advanced urology training in Birmingham and London, he spent two years as a fellow in New York at the renowned Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
In addition to core urology, his main area of interest is pelvic oncology and in particular laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, having spent six months in France, including at the Montsouris Institute in Paris, acquiring this challenging skill.
Mr Donohue is an expert on the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer and has developed a website to assist patients in decision making in this very complex and often confusing area. He uses the latest technology (MRI scanning and template fusion biopsy) to help with the diagnosis of prostate cancer. In contrast to the majority of cancers, there may be less urgency in deciding a treatment programme for localised prostate cancer. This allows patients time to come terms with the diagnosis and choose a treatment plan.
He was the first surgeon in the UK to use the Argus adjustable male sling for men with incontinence following prostate surgery.
