Research supports the discovery of new and improved ways of treating diseases and their symptoms, and takes place across a wide range of specialties, supported by a great many staff.

Our research programme is a balance of commercial (industry), NIHR portfolio and own account research projects. Projects include observational and interventional.

Traditionally research was led by consultant staff but increasingly, non medical and support staff are taking on the role of both chief and principal investigators.

How we can help

  • Research Governance team: the Research Governance team provide support for researchers in project design, set up, ethical review, resourcing, financing and achieving NHS approval.
  • Research Delivery team: the Research Delivery team provide advice and guidance on research set up (feasibility) and recruitment. They are also responsible for recruiting patients to studies and working closely with research leads.

The Research & Innovation team now have access to Grant Finder, the leading funding database in the UK.

The team can direct staff to funding that best suits their project(s) and offer support through the application process.

The Research and Innovation Department central office is based at Maidstone Hospital and the oncology clinical trials unit is also based at Maidstone in the Kent Oncology Centre.

Research activity takes place across Tunbridge Wells and Maidstone hospitals as well as in our satellite clinics that are held in other hospitals and clinics in other areas.

The central team consists of a governance department and a nursing service that both set up and deliver research projects. We provide support to all research staff from early research ideas through to the opening of studies.

The department can also signpost to other support services such as the Kent-based Research Design Service and our local statistician to help you to develop your project.
