All the pharmacists and technicians who work for the Trust are supported in their continuing professional development (CPD).

Pharmacists

After qualifying pharmacists continue to develop their knowledge and skills. Pharmacists gain experience by rotating through different specialist areas. Many undertake formal training offered by universities and attain post-graduate qualifications. The pharmacy department runs a programme of regular continuing education tutorials as well as assessing the training needs of individual pharmacists.

Pre-registration Pharmacist Training

Each year the Pharmacy Department provides a structured training for up to six pharmacy graduates in accordance with the General Pharmaceutical Council’s Pre-registration Training Programme. The competency based training combines rotations through the different specialities with regular tutorials and attendance at regional studies days organised by the Health Education Kent, Surrey and Sussex (KSS).

Pharmacy Technicians

Technicians can undertake a wide variety of formal and informal training programs aimed to develop the individual and the job role. In house training for ward based technicians (sometimes called ‘medicines management’ or clinical technicians) is underpinned by regional accreditation courses. Technicians also train for accuracy checking, and to become NVQ assessors or accreditied trainers. Technicians may also train to work in Medicines Information; training is provided locally and there is a national accreditation course.

Trainee Pharmacy Technicians

Trainee Pharmacy Technicians are recruited each year and join our team for a 2-year vocational training program. They work towards a NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services gaining experience in the department and and attending college on one day a week. On successful completion of their training the student applies to join the professional register for Pharmacy Technicians.

Pharmacy Assistants

Assistants receive training within the department to achieve an NVQ level 2 certificate.

Summer Students & Work Experience

We welcome pharmacy undergraduates and students who are interested in a career in pharmacy for short-term work experience.

Career Opportunites

Vacancies for permanent posts within the department are always advertised on the Trust’s NHS Jobs website. If you would like to discuss career opportunities within the pharmacy department please contact a member of the pharmacy team.
